YLI quilting thread for piecing

by Susanne
(NC)

I purchased a YLI Quilting thread, glazed 40 wt, 1200 yds, 100% cotton. Your site recommends a 50 wt. Can I still use the 40 wt.??

I am truly a beginning quilter. I am following a Craftsy BOM class and trying to read as much as I can to learn.

I really do love your website. I live in NC and so can't attend your classes; but I would if I could. Thanks for the help.

I believe that the thread you are referring to is YLI's hand quilting thread.

Hand quilting thread is glazed to help the thread slide through the fabric more easily with less effort and strain on your hand.

When you are machine quilting, the sewing machine is doing all the work and doesn't notice any extra effort, so glazing is not needed.

Do not use this glazed thread in your sewing machine for either quilting or piecing. The glaze may 'gum' up the insides of your machine. It's not worth the risk of having to take your machine into the dealer to have it cleaned.

My recommendation...

...is to return the thread if it hasn't been opened unless you plan to quilt your finished quilt by hand.

For piecing the quilt patches together by machine, I stand by my recommendation for a quality 50 wt, 100% cotton thread. Superior Threads' Masterpiece, Aurifil (on the orange cone or spool) and Prescenia all make good quality 50 wt cotton threads.

The thinner thread makes for more accurate piecing because the thread takes up less space in the seam allowance and the turn of the cloth.

I hope this helps. I'm sorry for the delay in answering. My father had an unexpected surgery and needed care and an advocate, but he'd turned off the internet and I was unplugged.

I'm so glad to hear you're finding the site useful. If you have other questions as you are piecing or quilting, please do let me know and I'll do the best I can to help.

You are in for a fabulous time!

Piecefully,
