Grandma's Surprise Quilt

by Terri Brown
(North Topsail Beach, NC)

I found this quilt inside a homemade duvet. Apparently my mother-in-law made a covering out of old sheets when the quilt started wearing out so it could still be used on a bed. It’s been in our garage!

We used it to cover furniture recently when we moved. I just happened to look inside a hole in the duvet and saw this quilt!

My mother-in-law is 96 and in assisted living. Due to the virus, we can not visit her and I really don't think she will remember it. I was hoping someone could tell me how old it is. I know it's hard to tell from a photo but I was so happy to find this and I want to perhaps put a new binding on it and repair some of the holes.

I would really appreciate any help you could give me.

Thank you,

Terri Brown

My mother-in-law did remember this quilt. I was so glad to get it fixed up and show it to her before she passed at Thanksgiving.

Memories

This is such a treasure! I am a social worker in a memory care facility. You might have another delightful surprise; many of our people can remember these items or perhaps a particular fabric will trigger a memory of a garment. I hope you get to show your MIL this soon.

Thank you for sharing this.

I am very much not an expert, but to me the fabrics look 1930s.
