Catawba Valley Quilters Guild

by Libby Sigmon
(Hickory, NC)

The Catawba Valley Quilters Guild was formed in 1984 and has grown to nearly 100 members. At monthly meetings members enjoy planned programs featuring members and/or visiting speakers who share ideas, expertise, and trunk shows. There is always an informal show-and-tell of members work. From time to time the Guild has workshops, both formal and informal. Most all Guild activities are aimed at furthering the art of quilting.

Catawba Valley Quilters Guild is a non-profit organization. Members also use their quilt-making expertise to make quilts for the local medical centers and for the Family Guidance shelter for abused women. They also participate in a variety of community activities to share their knowledge of quilting as well as the beauty of quilts.

Many members participate in informal Sit-and-Sew sessions on the off Thursdays when there is no formal meeting. These are just fun times when the participants work on their own individual projects and enjoy quilting fellowship.

The Guild has two chapters both of which meet on the same day--one in the morning and one in the evening. Combined meetings are held twice a year in June and December. Members may attend either or both meetings each month.

There is an open invitation to any and all to attend up to two meetings before deciding to become a Guild member. Dues are $20 per year (January-December), or $10 if joining mid-year.

The Guild typically has a quilt show every third year. Proceeds from this are used for the following three years to fund community project activities and materials. This year our show, Quilts of the Valley, is scheduled for October 12-14, 2012. Times are Friday & Saturday: 9-5:00; Sunday: 11-5:00. It will be held at The Hickory Metro Convention Center. Admission is $5 or $7 for all 3 days.
