Pfaff Quilt Expressions 4.0

by Sandra
(Riverside, california)

The large harp space and my experience with a Pfaff 5770 is the main reason I bought this machine.

It is fine for simple sewing and piecing but will not free motion quilt without going into the repair shop. The machine stalls, the thread breaks and the tension slips. The needle threader has broken three times, the blade in the thread cutter has fallen off. The light over the needle is shorted out and is usually burned out.

This machine is worthless as a FMQ machine. I bought it on the basis of the Pfaff reputation of the past and have had to finish do my quilting on my Brother machine bought from Costco for around $150.

Quilt Expression 4.0

I have had my QE4.0 since 2008 and love love it ! You can't buy a Pfaff from Costco's(I won't even waste my money at the junk store anyway)I learned from another kind membership company that they gets a special item but just for them so you can never find it cheaper anywhere else. So don't water the money. I just finished quilting a huge king 140 x140 on this machine. I have it in a Horn cabinet and it went smoothly. I don't care how far I am from a Pfaff dealer I wouldn't buy any other machine for quilting than a PFAFF ! They are the best with the IDT (walking foot) Look at Bernina's walking foot. It is huge and bulky. Nothing sews like a Pfaff. I have my 7570 still it's a work horse and easier to take to a class than my QE 4.0 after all it's for quilting and has a huge harp for quilting.

I live too far from a Pfaff dealer to buy a machine and they don't sell online so i bought a new machine on ebay,un-used, everything still sealed in the bags. After using about 3 bobbins it started jamming. I finally noticed I had to push the auto-cut button more than once to cut thread shortly before it jammed. My theory is it is the sensor for the cutter. About a $700 repair, my guess. The repair services listed don't return my calls. I have pieced two quilts without using the cutter and haven't had a jam since. Bottom line, the machine works fine if you don't use the thread cutter.

QE 4.2 has worked for me
by: Anonymous

I have had the Quilt expression 4.2 for about two years and have completed a number of complex projects: a queen size quilt, many home accessories and several mink teddy bears.

Free motion work must be done at a controlled speed, with proper needles and some patience for an occasional thread problem.

Overall, I find it to be a good machine for a fair price. I am looking to upgrade to the new Pfaff icon for more embroidery options.

Pfaff Quilt Expressions 4.2

I would have to agree. I purchased the Pfaff Quilt Expressions 4.2 thinking I could learn to free motion quilt and the dual feed dog would be an asset with Pfaff's reputation.

I first thought the frustration I was experiencing was my incompetence and it probably was to some degree, but I experienced the same tension issues, thread breaking, needles breaking and the incompetency of this machine. I have since just resorted to piecing and regular sewing with it.
