Bernina 820 - Settings for free motion quilting

by Neel
(California)

I am a new owner of a Bernina 820 and have started practicing free motion quilting on it with my BSR foot.

What settings do other Bernina 820 owners use for free motion quilting (i.e. the presser foot and the stitch length) and the thread tension?

I have used the BSR 1 setting and changed the stitch length to 3.0 and the presser foot pressure to 20 and the tension to 2.0. But am not sure I'm getting the best results with those settings.

Neel, I wish I could be of help, but I'm a Viking girl. I'll publish this question in hopes of a Bernina gal being able to help!

Readers, if you can help, please use the 'comments' link found just below. Thank you!

Are the settings you mention the defaults? You shouldn't really need to make setting changes if you're using a "normal" weight (40 or 50) cotton or poly thread.

For finer threads you'll most likely need to change the top tension a little until you find the right settings.

One thing that seems to be an issue with new 820/830 owners is that it is hard to learn to let the machine automatically do what we are used to doing ourselves. The machine defaults should give you great results. If you still have trouble, check with your Bernina dealer. Also, make sure you take advantage of new owner classes that they offer.

Hope this helps a little.
